7 Days remain!

This is what I accomplished yesterday. Hopefully today will yield even more fruitful results...like finishing Taluun's texture. I wish I had more time but I'm really in a crunch now!

8 DAYS!

I am a whirlwind of excitement and fear. Only 8 days until my thesis is completed. I am so unbelievably burnt out on it and quite frankly wanted nothing to do with it...then I got Substance Designer.

This program is amazing and though I've only played around with it for a bit, I love what it can do and the non destructive texturing it's capable of! I used it for this sword and I will be using it to finish texturing Taluun and the rest of the environment, which should be a breeze. The time is ever so near and I am so ready to start a new project!!! I have it planned out and am working on some concepts. I learned my lesson from my thesis that my characters need much more planning before diving into them. Granted, Senvenku was fun but he wasn't supposed to be a serious character. This next project will be and I am beside myself with excitement to start it!

Anyways, here's textured Elia and the sword she discovered, Fallahar.

The normals are a bit messed up on the sword and I plan to fix them. Right now it's super late and I'd like to go to bed. Until next time!

3 weeks remain!

Yes, there are only 3 weeks until I graduate and let me tell you things have been HECTIC. I've been working on tons of projects, random sculpts, networking, job seeking, and apartment hunting like mad. I've changed my website and resume to no longer say student and have taken the time to mourn CGHub by complaining about all other 3d image sites. My past few weeks have been crazy, and without further ado, here are some things I've done:

Thesis work~ Low poly Elia and textures

Portfolio Piece~ Man Ray

Portfolio Piece~ Senvenku

Random Cute thing~ Calavera Whale Shark

Small Sculpting project~ Hypno concept by Cryptid-Creations

Most of this stuff can be seen on my website which has also been updated! Anyways, as you can see, my life has been insanely busy, but I've done the best I can with what I've got. Have a good one and until next time, I hope you enjoy my art!

Thesis...and Gamagoori!

Kill la Kill, a fantastic anime in my opinion, has officially-ish ended recently. It was a ton of fun to watch and reminded me of how great Gurren Lagann was (and still is). So what do I have to show for it? Anything. I'm an artist, of course I have something to show for it!

I wanted to improve my texturing/color/value skills by doing a paintover of a scene from Kill la Kill and I wanted to get that practice while having fun! Here is the original shot:

I DID NOT MAKE THIS. This is the original shot from the anime. What I have done, however, it start by doing an ambient occlusion pass and am now adding color to the shot. I don't have any of the other people or anything because I want to work on Gamagoori first, and do the rest bits at a time. Anyways, here's MY paintover progress:

I'm pretty satisfied with it so far, but naturally will keep working diligently on it.

Also, it is fast approaching the time when I must complete my thesis and graduate! (GASP), but no fear for I am a complete idiot and wanted to redo my main character (yay)! Either way, I think it was a good decision on my part as I've learned a lot since I first began the project and wanted to improve on my skills. Even to this day I learn more and more, but must look forward and not spend forever on this...mostly because it's due.

These are just lo-res grabs from Zbrush of the clothing so far. I'm working on a neat chest plate for her now to lay over that sweater area. Gotta protect the heart, not the boobs, ya know? I figure extra plating over the middle of the chest never hurt anyone. Her jacket right now is BLINDING but it's alright because it'll probably be half that saturation by the time I'm done with it. So yeah.

Here's her without the hood...mostly to show her face better. I am dedicating very little time to her hair as she will be mostly wearing the hood and it wont matter. Right now her eyes are a bit spooooky but that will change in due time.

Anyways, that's essentially all I have to show for today! The only other news is I am going to sit down and really spend a good portion of this coming weekend actually finishing a few of my smaller projects and putting them into my portfolio. But Ryan, your thesis and that paintover are the only new projects your working on? Hah.hah.hah. Oh you wish...you wish >:) Until next time, look forward to what I will show you. Muwahaha

P.S. OWL!

Check out my twitter, cghub, and facebook page for some all new branding stuff! And yes, I will be changing this blog soon enough!!!

Lots of recent work!

First of all, hooray for website update! Click on this picture to see my new Man Ray page!

Secondly, here's an image dump of things I'm working on:

Girl sculpt. May turn into something

Quick dodo thing sculpt.

Goblin dude (old now)

Elia's new clothing in Maya. Going to put it into Zbrush soon after a few tweaks

Lastly, I got the internship at Hasbro/Cakemix studios! I am very excited and hopefully start this week. I won't be able to talk much about what I work on (or at all) but I will talk about how fun it is! My friend Dan also got the internship and you should follow him on twitter @TypicalDan

Have a good one! And until next time, I'll be working on my thesis and that new girl sculpt

Busy as a bee

I've done a lot since whenever I last posted. I also have grown too busy to type long words and explanations. So here's an image overload of everything I've worked on. Yay.

Also, I have a new facebook page: facebook.com/ryanchapmanart
Also, I have a tumblr: specsowl.tumblr.com

Facebook I will try and update daily. My tumblr I will try and update weekly (along with this).

Weekend work

Hello! This is a quick post today of things I've done (a mermaid and more/different work on thesis character)

Yay art! I'm going to try and do @SketchDailies on twitter more frequently for networking, publicity, and motivational purposes. (The mermaid was a prompt for earlier this week).

See ya!

Grrr

Blahh so I have to do some super annoying stuff on Taluun because back when I was young and naive I didn't understand anatomy as well as I do now so I'm missing vital parts like BICEPS TRICEPS AND THE SCAPULA. So yeah I had to completely redo some stuff as well as throwing some new things onto him. So there's that. I also started working on a small side project when I get bored. This will move considerably slower because I need to focus on my thesis. Anyhow, here's two pics:

Yay. Also have been retopo-ing the centaur girl. I hate her hands and will probably fix those. But otherwise she is making some progress. I'm going to UV her and bake and see how she comes out.

Otherwise, I'm just chugging along. Not enough sleep, as usual, and though it is INCREDIBLY frustrating...I find that correcting my mistakes is almost...a sign of progress? Like, I look back and think "Wow I was stupid. But now I am less stupid." I don't know, I think that's somethin.

Crisis! Ok, only kind of a crisis

So now that I'm finished with the Centaur, all I have left to do for projects is Thesis and Adrianna. However, that is never enough! I realize that I need, oh I don't know...better things on my portfolio. I see portfolios around me and what they look like and I feel like I pale in comparison.

I posted on polycount some advice, but even then, I want to also be independent in this decision. Instead of working on NEW projects (which I'd really like to do, btw) I think I might bite the bullet and do what I promised myself I'd never do!..touch up old models. I feel like I have some decent stuff but with time constraints, they never got to be what I really wanted them to be. That being said, it's time to make things look cool again! And I think I'll start with my Kappa Imp which was a concept from Nicholas Kole who is by far one of my favorite 2D artists (sorry other 2D artists!). I'll move onto a shark model which I made yeaaaaaaaaars ago but still somehow magically looks cool. Then Pumpkin girl and finally back to centaur where I can clean up a few mistakes here and there and really be a perfectionist about the thing.

Bahh what am I saying. You wanna see pictures? Here's an update on Taluun.

I still have some things to fix, but overall, thanks to the oh so glorious Marmoset 2, he's lookin' pretty snazzy. Spruce up those maps and I think he might just be something!

So twitter is a thing...

Hello!

So I've been working really hard the past few days, but not on what you may think...

See, I picked up a quick little side project that ended up being a ton of fun! About 4 days of work and I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I would've taken my sweet time on it, but with everything else going on in my life, a 4 day project is all I really needed, especially considering I still have Adrianna to do (oh yeah, and my thesis).

Without further ado: Centaur girl (Concept by Justin Chan)

I really like how she turned out and I actually posted her on CGHub! My first image ever on there (yay).

In other news I am EXHAUSTED!

Oh yeah, and I added some breakdowns to my website!

Rendered in Marmoset 2 and now on my site. Woo.

I know this was a lot to take in, but until next time!...I'll be sleeping.

Where in the world is Ryan Chapman?

Don't worry, I didn't die (hah I'm kidding, I know you don't actually care).

CHECK OUT MY REVAMPED SITE
Which is still being revamped-ish but it looks totally different than before

Anyhow, roughly a month ago I posted a quick and urgent post on what I was working on, which was my environment for my thesis. Since then I have done quite a bit more including animating, more environment work, and several side projects. Without further ado, here's my current environment progress:

Removed arches, added textures, changed the stairs, and, yeah, stuff. Still not finished but that is my goal for the weekend (let's see how that turns out). I realized that I love Maya for modeling but I miss using real-time renders. Those were the good ole days. Don't worry, I will eventually post real-time stuff about my thesis. I'm only doing mental ray for my animation.

Anyhow, other project is my original character: Original the Character (do not steal). I'm kidding, her name is Adrianna and she is the counterpart to Taluun (blue guy I posted before who is in my thesis). I thought it would be fun to do one more blue person with crystal...mishaps...but I promise this is my last one! My other projects are different (and one of them wicked cute). Blah blah blah here's Adrianna's progress:

Little bit more work to do, namely the glove and giving her an evil looking jacket and touch up stuff.

Yay Game art! Remember kids: brush your teeth, learn something new every day, and never not know what you are capable of (basically strive to get better)!

Churning it out the past few days

Hello there. Today's blog post will be a short one, as I am tired and am just going to show you pretty pictures. I'll explain later in a big update. Essentially this is the environment for my thesis. Still WIP

And yes...it's supposed to be in the sky
